Started by students, it is for them a true way of life.
It is a marker of social identity.
Preppy style conveys the values of a certain elite:

The Origins of Preppy Style
The word “preppy” comes from the intensive preparatory courses that students from American high society had to take the summer before entering the top universities.

Its students were, in fact, called preps.
Their style consisted of clothing:
- in pastel colors,
- with structured cuts,
- with prints,
- with crossed or straight lines,
- with long-sleeved shirts or polo shirts.
A BCBG look broken by a workwear / outdoor piece or an original detail. The whole gave the impression of a rebel in uniform. It was a mix of formal and functional clothing, initially intended for outdoor activities.
